TechNZ
Capability – postgraduate internships

The TechNZ postgraduate internship programme is not yet open to applications. Register your interest for new information at technzinternship@frst.govt.nz and we’ll alert you when this scheme opens.

Postgraduate internships are aimed at giving New Zealand’s future innovators a head start in their careers by enabling them to gain and develop their technical skills work in a commercial research environment.

We support postgraduate science, technology and engineering students by providing a maximum of $30,000 + GST per person towards a postgraduate salary for up to six months.

To support the programme, we are targeting companies who can provide challenging research projects that develop new products, processes or services.  Companies will be selected because of their involvement with the Foundation or the regional business partners.

Funding criteria - companies

  • Align with TechNZ company investment criteria
  • Have the ability to mentor the student:
    • preferably 10+ FTEs per project
    • start-ups limited to one student (unless they have a strong track record)
  • Provide an environment for strong student immersion in activities:
    • one student per project (unless a strong case can be made)
    • positive research and development (R&D) culture
    • committed overheads to support the engagement.

Funding criteria - postgraduates

Postgraduates must:

  • have good grades (B+ average)
  • undertake a project with the host company that is beyond business as usual activities.

Permanent residency is preferred.  However, international students who can demonstrate a strong case that the project will benefit New Zealand are also eligible.

Business eligibility

TechNZ capability funding is available to businesses at all stages of growth.

A business must be a person or entity that is in business and resident in New Zealand.

Businesses may not be an entity established under the Education Act 1989, Crown Research Institutes Act 1992, Local Government Act 2002 or the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000; or an entity that is 50% or more owned by one or more of those types of entities.
