TechNZ Fellowship encourages innovative companies to involve postgraduate students in their research and development programmes. This helps the company develop new knowledge that leads to the commercialisation of a new product, process, or service, which grows their revenue.
TechNZ Fellowship funding is provided to companies that are capable of mentoring postgraduate research projects. Typically these companies will invest heavily in research and development and some of their staff will have postgraduate qualifications. The student will perform at least half of the research at the company.
TechNZ Fellowship funding provides a tax free payment and travel allowance for the student and a fee for the university to support their role in the scheme. This funding is paid directly to the university as they administer the funds on behalf of the Foundation and they pay the student. The company pays the direct and mentoring costs as they gain a commercial return from the new knowledge generated in the project.

TechNZ capability funding is available to businesses at all stages of growth.
A business must be a person or entity that is in business and resident in New Zealand.
Businesses may not be an entity established under the Education Act 1989, Crown Research Institutes Act 1992, Local Government Act 2002 or the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000; or an entity that is 50% or more owned by one or more of those types of entities.
Fellowship funding is an on-demand process.
We use a six step process:
The size of your project investment will determine how long the process will take. Typically small TechNZ capability funding through regional business partners will take several weeks while large investments can require sign off from our management, and will take longer.
If you haven’t worked with us before, are considering undertaking research and development for the first time or want to undertake a small project, please contact your nearest regional business partner.
If you have successfully received TechNZ investment in the past, contact the nearest Foundation office or your Investment Manager.
