The research this scheme supports

The LCET? scheme supports research for New Zealand related to the scale-up and demonstration of existing research on second generation biofuels, other low carbon liquid biofuels and low carbon energy technologies.

The LCET scheme supports basic-targeted and applied research.

What this scheme aims to do

The LCET scheme will invest in research that leads to scale-up and demonstration of technology to an investor ready stage, assesses the environmental and socio-economic impacts of these technologies, and demonstrates the potential to reduce New Zealand’s carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector, including electricity and transport energy.

Who can apply for this funding?

Research organisations based in New Zealand and doing research for the wider benefit of New Zealand. This includes universities, crown research institutes and private organisations.

Scheme Objectives

There are several objectives for the LCET scheme, all of which are detailed in the investment signal.

The objectives for Low Carbon Energy Technologies are to:

  • support the New Zealand government’s policy objectives for climate change, energy and transport
  • develop the results of existing research and development in second generation biofuels up to and including pilot and/or demonstration stage, leading to their commercial development and use in New Zealand
  • develop the results of existing research and development in other low carbon liquid biofuels up to and including pilot and/or demonstration stage, leading to their commercial development and use in New Zealand
  • develop the results of existing research and development in other low carbon energy technologies up to and including pilot and/or demonstration stage, leading to their commercial development and use in New Zealand.
