The SCS? portfolio supports research for New Zealand related to the management, development and governance of cities and settlements that are conducive to positive environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes.

The types of research targeted for investment from this portfolio cover a range of focus areas including:

  • urban/peri-urban and rural
  • dynamics across different types of settlements.

This portfolio supports basic-targeted and applied research (including natural, physical and social science).

What this portfolio aims to do

Investments in this area aim to support New Zealand’s efforts to ensure the sustainable development of our cities.

This is achieved by supporting research that improves the quality of the urban environment, and creates an urban information base.

Who can apply for this funding?

Research organisations, including universities, crown research institutes and private organisations doing research for the wider benefit of New Zealand.

1.1 Quality of the urban environment
Enabling sustainable settlements through understanding the integrated nature of urban systems and how these influence economic, social, cultural and environmental outcomes.

Improving the quality of our urban environment through establishing tools, techniques and methods for urban decision-makers to manage and encourage sustainable behaviour (short-term proposals only).

1.2 The positive contribution of settlements
Establishing measurements for determining and understanding settlements’ and communities’ contribution to urban sustainability (short-term proposals only).

Establishing tools, techniques, systems and knowledge that enable the effective and efficient management of cities and settlements.

1.3 An urban information base
Forecasting and assessing future pressures on our cities and settlements (integrated approach to understanding pressures – social, cultural, economic and environment).
