The RIC? portfolio supports research in any aspect of the natural and man-made hazard-scape in New Zealand, focussing on issues of hazard characterisation, risk identification, and improved planning and preparedness prior to, during and after a hazard event encompassing science, engineering and soci-economic aspects of risk reduction.

This portfolio supports basic-targeted, applied and experimental development research.

What this portfolio aims to do

Investment in Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (RIC) will lead to the sustainable continuation of New Zealand’s economic and social well-being in an all hazards environment.

This will be achieved through the effective management of economic, infrastructural, social, political and other public risks.

Who can apply for this funding?

Research organisations, including universities, crown research institutes and private organisations doing research for the wider benefit of New Zealand.

Target outcomes and themes

Each portfolio has overarching goals, called target outcomes. Themes may support each target outcome. All of these are detailed in the portfolio investment strategy.

The implications of risk are identified and appropriate action is taken to
mitigate the risk and aid recovery
from an event.

1.1 Identification and understanding of risks and hazards
Lives are protected and business and social continuity is ensured through understanding risks associated with a comprehensive range of hazards (for example natural, accidental, chemical, biological, explosive and radiological).

1.2 Mitigation of risk
Businesses, communities and individuals understand the need for and carry out their own plans for dealing with emergencies.
1.3 Recovery from an event
Business, emotional, social, and physical functioning is restored quickly and cost-effectively.
