The types of research targeted for investment from this portfolio include research concerning:

  • children and young people
  • employment
  • ageing.

This portfolio supports include basic-targeted, and applied research.

What this portfolio aims to do

This portfolio aims to support New Zealand's efforts to build and sustain an inclusive society.

This is achieved through informing decisions, actions, strategies and policies aimed at improving social outcomes for New Zealanders.

Who can apply for this funding?

Research organisations, including universities, crown research institutes and private organisations doing research for the wider benefit of New Zealand.

Target outcome and themes

Each portfolio has overarching goals, called target outcomes. Themes may support each target outcome. All of these are detailed in the portfolio investment strategy.

The investment signal for each investment process will focus on some or all of these target outcomes and themes.

The target outcomes and themes for BIS are:

All children and young people have the opportunity to participate, to succeed and to make contributions that benefit themselves and others.
1.1 Improving the ability to respond to issues concerning children and young people in a changing world.
1.2 Understanding, identifying and contributing to the drivers and determinants of success and participation for children and young people.
1.3 Addressing enduring social challenges.
BIS2 - improving participation in employment
All New Zealanders are able to participate in sustainable, high quality and productive employment.
 
BIS3 - positive ageing
All New Zealanders are able to age positively, are highly valued and are recognised as an integral part of families and communities.
