Scheme Overview
SmartStart

What this scheme aims to do

SmartStart? helps companies to start or complete a significant research and development project. Preference is given to companies that have either grown strongly over the last few years or that have plans to grow rapidly in the future.

Who can apply for this funding?

Companies resident in New Zealand that are registered for GST, are a registered company or an incorporated society, and have a turnover of less than $50 million (or, if they are a subsidiary, then their parent company or group’s turnover is less than $50 million).

Companies starting their first project as well as those already involved in research and development can apply. Preference is given to proposals that will promote change in companies leading to significant growth.

The scheme does not extend to assisting companies to commercialise a product, ie to develop a marketing plan or help with distribution, as this is well beyond the research and development stage. However, NZ Trade and Enterprise may be able to help.

What the funding is for

The funding is for specialist external expertise that can help the company overcome road blocks that prevent them successfully completing research and development projects.
