Future Human Technologies (FHT)

This portfolio aims to support research that contributes to human health, function and wellbeing.

We are investing in this portfolio using a two-stage contestable process as part of the New Materials, Technologies and Services (NMTS) investment process.

Current funding available

In 2007/8 we are seeking to invest $6.4 million in research that aligns with the following target outcome:

• New Zealand economy diversifies and grows through research into new and emerging technologies that impact on human health, function and wellbeing.

We are seeking to invest in short to medium-term research projects as described in the following table.

The size and length of the research investment we seek to make:

Type of contract	Length	Qualities	Investment
Short-term project	Up to 3 years	Requests up to $350,000 per annum (GST inclusive). Aims to achieve a single objective. Contributes towards one intermediate outcome.	Up to 20% of total funds (maximum of $1.28 million per annum within the NMTS? investment process)
Medium-term project	Up to 6 years	Aims to achieve a single objective. Contributes towards one intermediate outcome.	Up to 100% of total funds (maximum of $6.4 million per annum)

All our portfolios are assessed using a number of balance factors. A successful concept or proposal may only need to score well against some of these balance factors.
