SmartStart

This scheme aims to support research with specialist external expertise that can help the company overcome road blocks to successfully completing research and development projects.

Typical SmartStart? projects include:

• planning the development of a new product
• determining the technical and commercial feasibility of developing a product
• investigating a range of solutions to a particular technology problem
• developing a research and development strategy for a company
• scoping commercialisation opportunities for a platform technology so as to identify the best opportunity
• developing an intellectual property strategy, including whether you are infringing existing patents (freedom to operate).

Current funding available

In 2007/08 we will be investing approximately $2.0 million through the SmartStart scheme. We are investing in this scheme using an on-demand process, meaning you can apply for funding at any time.

The funding is primarily available through selected agents from Economic Development Agencies, known as SmartStart agents. They can approve funding up to $5000 incl. GST within one-week. Applications requesting amounts between $5000 and the maximum of $25,000 incl. GST are processed by the Foundation? every two weeks but will also be handled through your agent.

SmartStart funding normally covers half of the project costs that are external to the company. The company pays the other half.
